To create a (non-shared) subcorpus:

  • Go to the Home Page to select your corpus (to get there click on Home in the top right of your screen).
  • Select a corpus and click on Text Types in the expert options if text type options are not already displayed.
  • Next to Subcorpus, click on Create New.
  • Name your subcorpus in the New Subcorpus Name box.
  • Select the documents you wish to take your subcorpus from
    • for fields with tickboxes next to the values, you simply select the boxes for the categories you want
    • if you do not make a selection for a field, then your subcorpus will include data regardless of the value for this field
    • where there is a box for free text entry, if you want to specify categories from this field then you can start typing and you will get a menu to select from (given the characters you typed).
  • click "Create Subcorpus" at the bottom of the page.

Now you will see this subcorpus in the list of subcorpora. If you click concordance then this list will be available for restricting your query to a specified subcorpus with the Text Types option.

When creating a subcorpus, you can tick more than one box, from one or more lists.

  • If two boxes are ticked in the same list, this is interpreted as 'or' (for example, if tickboxes for newspapers and journals are both ticked, searches will be in documents that are either newspaper or journal).
  • If boxes are ticked in different lists, this is interpreted as 'and' (for example, if tickboxes for genre:newspapers and region:British are ticked, searches will be in documents that are both newspaper and British).
  • To select more than one item from a free entry box you can type a few characters and select your first item and then type "|" to begin another selection by typing and selecting. Again, multiple selections from one entry box is interpreted as 'or' and so either condition can be matched.

Subcorpora created in this manner cannot be shared with other users, to do so, it is necessary to create pre-compiled subcorpora.
