To search in specific category/sub-categories of a corpus:
- Go to the Home Page to select your corpus (to get there click on Home in the top right of your screen).
- You are then taken to the form where you can enter a query to make a Concordance
- If Text Types are not already visible on the main screen then click on the expert option Text Types on the left hand side panel
- NB: some corpora have detailed classifications of texts whereas others have few or none, so offer few or no options.
- You can now select the category/sub-category (Text Type):
- Tick the tickbox beside the category or subcategory you want.
- If there is a box for free text entry you can start typing and you will get a menu to select from (given the characters you typed).
- You can select more than one choice, from one or more lists.
- If two boxes are ticked in the same list, this is interpreted as 'or' (for example, if tickboxes for newspapers and journals are both ticked, searches will be in documents that are either newspaper or journal. Remember that the actual categories and subcategories available will depend on the corpus you are using).
- If boxes are ticked in different lists, this is interpreted as 'and' (for example, if tickboxes for genre:newspapers and region:British are ticked, searches will be in documents that are both newspaper and British).
- To select more than one of item from a free entry box you can type and select your first item and then type "|" to begin another selection by typing and selecting. Again, multiple selections from one entry box is interpreted as 'or' and so either condition can be matched.
- When you have made the query, click on Make Concordance.
- All of the results will be in the category of your choice.
